The Breakfast Routine

I started intermittent fasting in 2019. The meal I decided to skip is breakfast, simply because it's the easiest one to skip.

Without breakfast, I can sleep a bit more before heading into the office (remember this is in 2019). It's difficult to skip lunch because you need a break and go out to socialise with your colleagues. So skipping lunch is out of the question. Skipping dinner is difficult as well because dinner to me is the main meal of the day. It is also THE meal to socialise; you catch up with your friends and loved ones over dinner, you enjoy a dinner date with your other half, etc.

Truth be told, I like breakfast. I enjoy eating breakfast. A good start to the day begins with a good breakfast. Let me be clear, a good breakfast is one in which you prepare with intention and eat at leisure (preferably with a book or papers in hand). It is not the one you hurriedly cobble together and wolf down in a matter of minutes. But since a leisurely breakfast is nearly impossible during the working week, I settled on fasting breakfast.

However, recently I started eating breakfast again.

It all started with the bread machine that my mother passed to me. It was an old bread machine, but it still works. So I decided to keep it and make bread - that way I don't have to buy bread anymore. A small loaf of bread will last me a week (kept in the freezer). I'm not sure if it helps me to save money, but I do believe my loaves will be a tad healthier since it doesn't have preservatives and unnecessary add-ons. I enjoyed producing my own loaves, so much so that I decided to eat a slice for breakfast daily.

There goes my intermittent fasting. Weight gain here I come!

Breakfast has become a ritual now, along with my discovery of pour-over coffee brewing. Every morning I look forward to putting the kettle on, toasting my frozen bread, preparing the pour-over equipment, and just simply putting together my breakfast. It is not even anything fancy; no eggs, no bacon, no tomatoes. Just a slice of toasted bread with butter (and sometimes marmalade), and a cup of coffee. If I'm not in the mood for coffee I'll switch to tea. It is so hassle-free and quick that it is a pure delight. I even have time to eat it leisurely while reading a book.

Definitely a good start to my day.
